2010 Update

UK Building Regulations Amendments.

The new UK Building Regulations' have now been published and these come into effect on the 1st October 2010. The summary of these amendments are quite tough and the requirements are as follows:

Part L1A (New Build Dwellings)  
  • Area-weighted average U-value of 2.0W/m2K (2.2W/m2K 2006) for windows, doors and curtain walling
  • Therefore notional window value of 1.5W/m2K (1.8W/m2K 2006) with typical 1230mm x 1480mm window to EN14351
Part L1B (Existing Dwellings)  
  • Windows - 1.6W/m2K (2.0W/m2K 2006) or Window Energy Rating 'C' or above (WER 'E' 2006)
  • Doors - > 50% Glazed = 1.8W/m2K (Not specified in 2006)
  • or Other Doors = 1.8W/m2K (Not specified in 2006)

Note 1: The 1.2W/m2K Glass Centre Pane value is no longer a form of compliance unless the need to maintain the facade or the character of the building is required.

Note 2: Insulated cavity closers should be installed where appropriate.
Part L2A (New Build Non-Dwellings)  
  • Average 2.2W/m2K (Same as 2006)
  • Therefore notional window value of 1.8W/m2K with typical 1230mm x 1480mm window to EN14351
Part L2B (Existing Non-Dwellings)  
  • Windows = 1.8W/m2K (2.2W/m2K 2006) or Window Energy Rating C or above (WER 'E' 2006)
  • Doors = > 50% Glazed = 1.8W/m2K (Not specified in 2006)
  • or Other Doors = 1.8W/m2K (Not specified in 2006)
  • Doors High Usage = 3.5W/m2K (Not specified in 2006)
  • Curtain Wall = Limit of 1.8W/m2K ( 2.2W/m2K 2006) or U limit = 0.8 (((1.2+(FOL x 0.5))x GF)

Note 1: The 1.2W/m2K Glass Centre Pane value is no longer a form of compliance unless the need to maintain the facade or the character of the building is required.

Long term Objective

  • The 2010 revision is a 25% improvement on 2006 (In some areas this has been relaxed)
  • In 2013 the regulations will be revised again. This time looking for 44% improvement on 2006 figures
  • These incremental steps work towards the objective of Zero Carbon buildings by 2016
